        Why this calculator asks about devices instead of just counting them

        Most speed calculators ask “how many devices?” and call it done. But a laptop on email and a laptop downloading a 60 GB game update are not the same device — they’re completely different bandwidth events. This calculator maps each device to a realistic peak usage pattern based on what you actually selected in Step 2. The activity chips aren’t decoration: each one carries a real Mbps figure based on how those protocols actually behave, not what ISPs put in brochures.

        What the utilization gauge is actually measuring

        The gauge above shows your peak utilization — what your home needs at its busiest moment divided by what you’re paying for. Under 30% means most of your paid bandwidth sits idle even when everyone is home and active. The 60–85% zone is where a well-matched plan lives: enough headroom for occasional spikes without paying for three times what you use.         Why the Smart Choice speed looks suspiciously low

        ISPs have trained us to think anything under 500 Mbps is inadequate. In reality, a 4K Netflix stream uses 25 Mbps. Online gaming uses about 5 Mbps — it needs low latency, not raw bandwidth. A household with a TV, two phones, a laptop on Zoom, and a gaming console running simultaneously rarely exceeds 80–100 Mbps of combined real demand. The jump from 100 to 500 Mbps saves about 30 seconds on a large download and costs hundreds of dollars a year.
