The first thing you pick isn’t a CPU generation or a TPM version. It’s what you actually sit down and do on this computer. That’s deliberate — the same six-year-old laptop means something completely different to someone editing video than to someone who only checks email on it, and the memory a workload realistically needs is what decides whether “old hardware” is actually a problem here.

Hardware comes in two modes because most people don’t know their TPM version off the top of their head, and shouldn’t have to. Quick guess works off the age of the machine, roughly how much memory it has, and whether it’s on an SSD or a spinning hard drive — enough to place most people correctly without opening a single settings panel. Switching to exact specs replaces that guesswork with the three things Windows 11 actually gates on: TPM 2.0, a supported CPU generation, and Secure Boot. Leave one as “not sure” and it isn’t quietly assumed in your favor — it’s tracked, named later, and the hardware card visually flags that the result rests on an unknown.

A five-year-old office laptop with 8GB of RAM, used mainly for browsing and video calls, with cost a real concern right now, lands in the blocked-but-Home-is-enough corner of the map below the verdict — and the actual recommendation for that combination is a Windows 10 + ESU bridge, not a rushed purchase.
