How your risk score is built
Age alone doesn’t define your injury risk in pickleball. A 58-year-old who warms up properly and plays on indoor courts can score lower than a 38-year-old who hammers overheads on concrete with no rest days. This calculator weighs twelve independent factors, assigns each one a zone-specific impact, then combines them into four separate scores before producing an overall number. The zones matter individually — what damages an elbow is not the same as what damages a knee. The model tracks cumulative load rather than current symptoms, which is why a zone can score high before it ever hurts — pain is a delayed signal, and damage is usually cheapest to address before it arrives.
Why each body zone has its own score
Elbow — Power drives, topspin strokes, and the classic tennis forearm habit all load the outer elbow tendon unevenly. Former tennis players carry 15 extra risk points here regardless of anything else they do.
Knee — Pickleball demands constant sideways stopping. Court surface amplifies this dramatically. Concrete sends almost all impact force back into the joint. Indoor sport courts absorb much more. Your weight also feeds directly into the knee score.
Shoulder — Overhead smashes load the shoulder in a way no other pickleball shot does. The same area is often already worn down in former tennis players. Shoulder risk climbs steeply with volume even when there’s no pain yet.
Wrist — The dink game looks easy on the wrist. It isn’t. Thousands of small wrist snaps per session add up fast. Topspin and slice strokes make this significantly worse.
What changes your result the most
- Current pain during play — adds 15 points to the affected zone. Playing through pain is the fastest route to a serious injury that keeps you off the court for months.
- Previous injuries to the same zone — adds 20 points. Old injuries make re-injury 3–5× more likely if you don’t change what caused the first one.
- Weekly volume above 10 hours — the highest load bonus across all four zones at once. Volume is the single biggest driver of overuse injuries in this sport because recovery happens between sessions, not during them — dropping from 10 hours a week to 7 at the same intensity is often the highest-impact change available, which is why the score moves so much when that one number changes.

Player A: 52 years old, 7 hrs/week, former tennis player, no warm-up, concrete courts. Elbow: 87 / Overall: 68
Player B: 52 years old, 7 hrs/week, no tennis history, 12-min warm-up, indoor courts, strength training twice a week. Elbow: 34 / Overall: 28 — same age, same hours. The habits are the variable, not the birthday.
